Solange Castro

I just like to giggle.  I think the desire defies all logic and reason.  I just gravitate to funny people.

What comedy most inspires you?

A really refined and clear voice. Comedy that has been really thought out.  People being truthful and honest. I'm not into body humor. I get grossed out by body stuff.

Which comedian most inspires you?

Maria Bamford, Tig Notaro and Hannah Gadsby.

Which comedian scares the shit out of you because you know you'll never be that good?

I accepted a long time ago that I would never be as good as Bamford.  But it's not a competition (although some may feel it is).

Why and how did you get into comedy?

I just like to giggle.  I think the desire defies all logic and reason.  I just gravitate to funny people.

What drives you to do what you do?

Sometimes anger and frustration, sometimes it's just silliness. I think of something funny and want to share it.

Describe your perfect Tuesday.

Pre or post-covid? I would say now a good Tuesday is when the news doesn't sink my heart and I can go outside and breathe the air. (I live in California and in the last few weeks we have had multiple fires and an earthquakes...good times.)

Describe your worst experience on a coach.

Like a stage coach? Never been on one.

Best sofa you've ever slept on?

I need a mattress. I'm old.

Best piece of advice a comedian ever gave you?

This was all given to me by experienced pros... Don't talk about "comedy" in your set.   The bad sets are better for you than the good ones.  You have to be your own biggest fan.

Worst piece of advice a critic ever gave you?

Be a "Insert Stereotype" kind of comic.

Tell us a joke.

I saw a couple go by on one of those bird scooters.  I thought, that's so romantic...when people want to die together.

What's the furthest you've travelled for the least amount of money/open spot?

I don't think I have ever really travelled just for comedy. If I am going somewhere I'll try to find a place to get booked.  Needless to say I am not doing it for the money.

On a scale of 1-10 , how hungry are you right now?

I just ate some lentils. So not very hungry.

How has lockdown been for you?

Sad but really busy. I have a job.  I don't know whether to be sad for myself or all the people who don't have one.

Have you been more or less productive?

Creatively this is the least productive I have ever been. The best thing for me during lockdown has been busy work.

Anything else you'd like to say?

I could complain about comedy, but I think that's a pre-covid luxury.  Now I am grateful for all the opportunity I have.
